This is probably the most publicized piece of artwork I ever did. In 1972 I was on a paint crew for Midwest Paint Service. We traveled all over the states painting grain elevators. The whole crew was "high" in those days. You had to be to do that kind of dangerous work. My job was to paint the signs and logos. At the end of the day I had only finished with the letters you see at the left, on purpose. I spent a sleepless night worrying about the flack I would get the next day. Nothing happened and I finished the sign and we went on down the road to the next job. In 2005, 33 years later, I was back working for this same company in a different capacity and stopped in at this same elevator which now had a different name and a young manager who wasn't even born when I painted the sign. I began to ask him if he knew anything about it and that I was the one who painted it. Before I could finish my question he took me into his office and showed me a wall sized photo of my sign. He then showed me the highschool yearbook from 1972. The picture was on the cover! He then showed me the front pages of the Omaha and Lincoln newspapers from that day, both of which displayed my sign! Gee whiz! This must have been my 15 minutes of fame!
